Fully Funded Scholarship in Decarbonisation of the Maritime Sector: Understanding the Generation of Natural Hydrogen

As the need to decarbonise transportation, especially the maritime sector, intensifies, there is growing interest in hydrogen energy. Geological seeps of Natural Hydrogen have been known for decades but regarded as curiosities. This project aims to understand the underlying chemistry responsible for the formation of this low-cost and energy-efficient source of hydrogen. The research focuses on using X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) to examine cross-sections of recent drill samples linked to Natural Hydrogen production. By leveraging modern synchrotron facilities with micro and nano spot sizes, the project will develop a comprehensive understanding of iron (Fe) chemistry and the alterations that occur under varying environmental conditions. You will be part of a cohort within the Southampton Marine and Maritime Institute (SMMI), receiving unique exposure to state-of-the-art analytical methods.
