This PhD project aims to develop cutting-edge electrospray ionisation mass spectrometry (ESI-MS) techniques specifically for spacecraft missions. While ESI-MS is the gold standard for biological analysis on Earth, its complexity and size have prevented its use in space. This project will resolve these issues by applying electrospray techniques from spacecraft propulsion and miniaturisation methods proven on ESA Rosetta and Beagle2 missions.
Working under a unique collaboration between aerospace engineering and chemistry, the researcher will create a system capable of detecting complex biosignatures on icy moons (like those of Jupiter). The project leverages the expertise of Dr. Charlie Ryan in ionic liquids and Professor Geraint Morgan in flight-proven mass spectrometry to bridge the gap between propulsion technology and analytical science.

Eligibility
UK 2:1 honours degree or international equivalent in a relevant field
Background in aerospace engineering, chemistry, physics, or related disciplines
Interdisciplinary interest in space instrumentation and biological detection
Meeting the University's English language requirements (IELTS 6.5 or equivalent)
Requirements
Strong analytical and laboratory skills
Knowledge of mass spectrometry or electrospray techniques (desirable)
