Google Summer of Code (GSoC) is a global, online program focused on bringing new contributors into open source software development. Contributors work with an open source organization on a 12+ week programming project under the guidance of mentors. It is one of the most prestigious remote internships for developers, offering a stipend (payment) adjusted by location (Purchasing Power Parity).

Eligibility

• Must be at least 18 years old

• Discuss project ideas with the organization's mentors
• Write and submit a Project Proposal
• Demonstrate coding ability (often via a small fix or contribution)

Application Process

• Browse the list of accepted mentor organizations (published Feb 19, 2026)
• Contact the organization via their Slack/Discord/Mailing list to discuss ideas
• Draft your project proposal based on their feedback
• Submit your proposal via the GSoC website between March 16 and March 31, 2026

How to Apply

• This is NOT a typical application. You cannot just 'apply'.
• You must interact with the organization FIRST.
• Join their chat, fix a small bug ('good first issue'), and ask for feedback on your proposal draft before submitting it.

Selection Process

• Review of proposals by Mentor Organizations
• Ranking of best proposals by Org Admins
• Final slot allocation by Google
• Announcement of accepted contributors in May
