The International Climate Protection Fellowship enables prospective leaders to conduct a one-year project in Germany. Fellows work on a research-based project of their own choice in the field of climate protection or climate-related resource conservation. They are hosted by a university or institution in Germany and receive comprehensive financial and professional support.

Eligibility
Must be a citizen of a non-European developing or transition country
Must have a first university degree (Bachelor's or Master's) completed less than 12 years ago
Must have clearly defined leadership potential
Must have at least 48 months of relevant work experience (for prospective leaders) OR a PhD (for postdocs)
Must have a hosting agreement from a host institution in Germany
Requirements
Find a host in Germany (university, NGO, or enterprise) willing to mentor you
Develop a project proposal aimed at climate protection
Provide two letters of recommendation
Provide a confirmation of support from the German host
Prove English or German language proficiency

Identify a host institution in Germany that matches your research area
Contact the host and agree on a project proposal; secure their written confirmation
Register on the Humboldt Foundation online portal
Complete the application form and upload all documents
Submit the application by February 10, 2026
How to Apply
This is a project-based fellowship, not a degree program. You must first find a mentor in Germany who agrees to host your research. Once you have a host, apply via the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation portal with your joint proposal.
