PhD Studentship: Measuring and Modelling How Physical Forces Shape Limb Development

This PhD project investigates the biological and mechanical transformation of limb development during adolescence. Specifically, it focuses on how physical forces and individual bone geometry shape the fusion of the growth plate—a critical process for future joint health. The successful candidate will join an interdisciplinary team from bioengineering and biology. The research involves using imaging data to design and manufacture physiologically accurate moulds for living cell models of growth plate tissue. You will then use custom loading devices to apply physiological loads to these models, coupling this with biomechanical modelling to understand the role of geometry in growth plate closure. The project is 50% funded by the Institute for Life Sciences (IfLS) with the remaining 50% subject to competition funding within the School.
